April brings Earth Day. A global initiative calling on countries and communities around the world to act on protecting our precious planet.
Founded in 1970, it has brought over 50 years of dramatic difference. Ensuring environmentally friendly ideas and approaches become the new normal and even leading to laws and legislation. Powerful stuff.
Each year there is a set theme. This year it is ‘Our Power. Our Planet’. Reflecting the people power of collective action in shaping environmental outcomes. And there are many ways to participate.
- Run educational events for adults and children so they can better understand what to do and how they can help.
- Organise litter clean-ups and beach and nature clearings helping local communities own and improve their neighbourhoods.
- Hold peaceful demonstrations.
- Lobby local authorities.
- Plant pollinator gardens.
- Eat plant-based food.
- Say no to fast fashion.
People power is made up of individual gestures as well as collective campaigns. No action is too small or insignificant. It is better to do something than nothing.
In the words of Earth’s best-known ambassador and advocate, Sir David Attenborough: “What humans do over the next 50 years will determine the fate of all life on the planet.”
